The Townsville Economic Gateway plan has just been launched by the Deputy Premier, the Hon. Paul Lucas MP, Townsville City Council, and the Port of Townsville.

The plan recognises the inseparable links between the city, industry and the Port of Townsville.

Port of Townsville

The Economic Gateway plan takes into account the potential for a trebling in trade through the Port of Townsville by 2030. It incorporates elements of the Port's Master Plan which includes new and upgraded berths, land reclamation, improved transport and storage facilities, and strategically positioned land developments.

The inner harbour rationalisation is underway, with design works well progressed for the upgrading of berths 4, 8 and 10 and the removal of berths 6/7. The port will be expanded seaward in coming years to cater for increased bulk trades and this will occur as opportunities present.

Eastern Access Corridor

Linking the Port to the Townsville State Development Area at Stuart, the Eastern Access Corridor will divert heavy vehicles from the suburbs, improving Port access and efficiency as well as the amenity and safety of residents.

Townsville Port Marine Precinct

At the mouth of Ross River is the Townsville Port Marine Precinct, complete with boat building, maintenance and service facilities, chandlery, marine engineering services, commercial fishing fleet facilities and improved ramp access for recreational boating.

Townsville State Development Area

The Townsville State Development Area will provide new opportunities for value added minerals processing and transport and distribution services connecting northern Australia to the Asia Pacific region.

Together, the development of Townsville's CBD, Port and State Development Area create the vision that is Townsville Economic Gateway.
