Preliminary assessments of recent business activity indicates that trade at Port of Townsville is forecast to supersede 10 million tonnes to as much as 32 million tonnes in coming years. Economic and trade forecasts suggest a positive outlook for growth in cargo throughput which will generate demand for port development. Global shipping and cargo handling trends will influence changes to infrastructure for the port to remain a viable and competitive gateway.

Port of Townsville is a catalyst and partner for establishing and developing trade within North Queensland. The port handles approximately $5 billion worth of exports annually, and contributes an enormity of value added to the regional community including over 1,000 full time equivalent jobs to the local area. With up to 700 cargo vessels and 30 naval vessel movements each year, in addition to cruise vessels and bunkers, the port and associated industries form a world class gateway for global trade and commerce.

Townsville is home to Queensland's third largest multi-cargo port with a diverse product base. Our port facilities are well adapted to handle bulk cargo with current facilities developed to service the sugar industry, Queensland Nickel Limited and products of the North West Mineral Province including bulk copper, lead and zinc concentrates and fertiliser. There is sufficient infrastructure capacity within our Inner Harbour to accommodate growth in bulk products, containers and general cargo, with significant expansion potential within the Outer Harbour which could readily accommodate additional infrastructure development required for new projects.

Port of Townsville offers a number of advantages to any new development or trade project. These advantages include:-

  • A central location offering minimum sea distances between Townsville and international trading partners;
  • Flexibility of existing infrastructure and expansion potential to readily accommodate new cargos; and,
  • Significant areas of available land adjacent to berthing infrastructure to support product handling activities.
