The Port of Townsville is unique in comparison to many of the word’s Ports in that it is located in close proximity to a number of sensitive environments including the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, the Great Barrier Marine Park, Dugong Protected Areas, sea grass beds, fringing coral reefs, mangrove forests, and the city of Townsville.
The Port of Townsville recognises the sensitivity of the surrounding environment and is committed to working with the wider port community to ensure that port activities are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner and for all port operations to have a minimal impact on the environment.
Environmental management of the port environment is the culmination of all planning, operations, and monitoring activities for the long-term sustainable development of the port of Townsville. The Corporation lists environmental management as a top priority and encourages proactive and responsive environmental management throughout the port.
The Corporation's Environmental team plays a major role in the management of activities at the Port of Townsville, working closely with Port customers and a wide range of governmental departments to promote a healthy system of port-wide environmental management.
