Port of Townsville Limited (the Corporation) is committed to:
- providing a safe Port;
- preventing all workplace injuries and illnesses; and
- ensuring all workers and visitors on port land are safe.
How does the Corporation achieve this?
- Conducting safety inductions for workers and visitors;
- Promoting safe work practices;
- Implementing the safe walkways initiative; and
- Promoting use of safety equipment.
What are the clothing requirements?
The Corporation has a Personal Protective Equipment Policy with regards to employees and contractors.
As a minimum requirement safety helmets, safety footwear, and high visibility clothing must be worn in operational areas or as directed by Managers and Supervisors. Operational areas are anywhere in the Port where cargo handling activities are in progress.
Port users, operators or contractors also have site-specific requirements for personal protective equipment.
Contractors and visitors are not required to wear the minimum clothing requirements when working in or visiting offices, mess rooms or exclusion zones.
Safe Walkways
These are yellow painted walkways located on berths and around the port area to help everyone safely move around busy operational areas. They are located on all berths, pathways and other operational areas.
Everyone, including all workers, shipping agents, crew, visitors and media representatives should use these walkways.
Safe walkways should be used at all times when you are moving through an operational area/berth including moving from car parks to ships, ships to taxis, ships to Mission to Seafarers. It is also important to follow safety directions given to you by berth operators.
Inductions and Conditions of Entry
It is a requirement that each person entering the Port must undergo a safety induction or be escorted by an appropriate person familiar with the procedures.
Safety inductions are carried out every Monday morning at the Corporation’s Engineering Building, commencing at 0900hrs and concluding at 1030hrs. To book an induction please phone (07) 4781 1600. Entry to the Port is granted on the understanding that you are aware of your obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld) and Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld).
Speed Limits
All persons on Port lands must obey all traffic signs placed by either the Corporation or Port Users. The maximum speed for wharves is 20 kilometres per hour (or as indicated) and the maximum speed for roads is 50 kilometres per hour (or as indicated).
Entry to Operational Areas
Only authorised vehicles or persons are permitted on wharves when cargo handling operations are in progress. Speed limits are to be strictly adhered to when driving through operational areas.
Authorised Officer’s Directions
The Corporation’s Authorised Officers may give a direction to a person if the activities of the person may affect Port operations and it is reasonably necessary to ensure the safety and security of the Port of Townsville. For further information please refer to our Port Notices.
Occupational Health and Safety Management System
The Corporation’s commitment to providing and maintaining the best possible standard of health and safety for everyone at the Corporation is supported by its Occupational Health and Safety Management System, certified to AS/NZS 4801:2001.
The Occupational Health and Safety Management System establishes a framework for:
- consideration of, and compliance with, relevant legislative, regulatory and statutory obligations;
- hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control requirements for routine and non-routine activities;
- reduction of workplace injury and illness;
- accident and incident prevention initiatives; and
- training, awareness, communication and consultation requirements.
The Corporation’s Safety Policy and Fitness for Work Policy set out the occupational health and safety requirements necessary for achieving the objectives of the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
