Imports

Cement: Imported from Gladstone by Cement Australia.
Zinc Concentrates: A concentrate is a concentrated amount of a particular mineral. Sunmetals import Zinc concentrates and refine the concentrates into zinc metal.
Fertiliser: Primarily Incitec Pivot imports Nitrogen-based fertiliser. Used in the agricultural industry.
General Cargo: This includes general items that are imported such as pots, machinery, personal effects, spare parts, etc.
Motor Vehicles: Vehicles are imported from around the world, especially from Japan and Korea. Brands of cars include, Nissan, Toyota, Kia, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Subaru, and Hyundai.
Nickel Ore: Imported by Queensland Nickel (QNI), nickel ore is used to make Nickel - which is predominantly used in the making of stainless steel products.
Oil: Imported by Shell, BP, Caltex, and Ampol. It is used in domestic motor vehicles, aviation, and in the mining industry.
Sulphur: Imported by Southern Cross Fertilisers (formerly WMC) and is used in the production of sulphuric acid, which is a major component in the production of fertiliser.
Sulphuric Acid: Imported by Queensland Terminals and sold to Southern Cross Fertilisers who use it in the production of phosphate fertiliser.

Exports

Cattle: Exported to the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, and Egypt.
Coke: Originates from the Bowen Coke Factory. This is not the coke you drink. It is metallurgical coke and is generally exported to Europe for use in specialised applications. It is also used in the lead smelting process in Mount Isa.
Concentrates: e.g. lead, zinc: Xstrata and BHP Billiton export Lead and zinc concentrates to Europe, Asia, and South East Asia.
Refined Copper: Exported to Canada and China by Xstrata.
Feed Pellets: Fodder for the cattle when they are en route to their final destination.
Fertiliser: Southern Cross Fertilisers export 900,000 tonnes of fertiliser each year.
General Cargo: This includes general items for export such as milk, sleepers, machinery, spare parts, and sandlewood.
Lead Ingots: Refined metal exported to England for use in a whole variety of applications, e.g., batteries, lead weights.
Meat and meat by-products: Exported to the USA and China.
Molasses: Exported from the Burdekin and Herbert River. Used for stock feed.
Nickel: Exported to South East Asia and Europe by QNI.
Sand/Gravel: Used to make concrete on Palm Island.
Sugar: Queensland Sugar export approximately 1.2 million tones of sugar around the world each year.
Sulphuric Acid: In Mount Isa, Southern Cross Fertiliser uses sulphur dioxide emissions from Xstrata's smelting facilities to manufacture sulphuric acid. It is the largest of its kind in the world. The acid is railed to Phosphate Hill and used in the fertiliser production process. Excesses are then exported.
Timber: Exported to Japan, China, and Korea by Pentarch Forest Products.
Zinc Ingots: Sunmetals export zinc to Europe, South East Asia, and North America.

Zinc is essential to a modern society. It provides the most cost-effective and environmentally efficient method of protecting steel against corrosion. By prolonging the life of steel, zinc performs an invaluable service - it helps to save natural resources such as iron ore and energy and extends the life of steel goods and capital investments in steel, such as homes, bridges, port facilities, power lines and water distribution, telecommunications and transport.
Zinc's main uses include:

  • Anti-corrosion coatings on steel (galvanising).
  • Automobiles.
  • Precision components (die-castings).
  • Zinc oxide.
  • Construction material.
  • Brass.
  • Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics.
  • Micronutrient for humans, animals, and plants.
Zinc is also an essential element, which is indispensable for human health and for all living organisms.
