Our Future

The Port of Townsville is a general-purpose cargo Port and continues to be one of the State’s fastest growing Ports. The future continues to look bright for the Port of Townsville, something everybody at the Corporation is working hard to ensure.

The Port of Townsville has a dual role – public agency and business enterprise. On behalf of the Shareholding Ministers, the Port is committed to making a significant contribution to both the regional and State economy.

Our mission is to be recognised as a dynamic world class port that is reliable, dependable, and customer-focused, serving as a catalyst for regional economic development.

The Port of Townsville aims to ensure the Port continues to move forward by working closely with port users and customers, looking to expand and tap into overseas markets, and continuing relationships already made with industries and sister cities in neighbouring nations.

Increasingly, major industry and expanded local business opportunities are expressing an interest in Townsville due to the long-term sustainability offered by the city. With an efficient deep-water Port, diversity of economy, government investment, and the social infrastructure to support a growing city, Townsville offers an attractive alternative to other business centres.

Preliminary assessments of recent business enquiries indicate that trade throughput at the Port of Townsville may increase from about 10 million tonnes to as much as 32 million tonnes in the next 15 years.

The Corporation is working to strategically align the Port in terms of infrastructure, land use planning, and financial capacity to ensure the Port of Townsville is in a position to take advantage of regional growth catalysts such as internationally-competitive gas and power supplies, the development of the Eastern Access Corridor, and the Townsville State Development Area.

The Corporation is actively targeting existing and potential clients to retain and expand the Port’s present trade, attract new trades and clients, and diversify the Port’s trade base.

The Corporation is not the sole driver of activities at the Port of Townsville. However, the Corporation is in a unique position to be a catalyst to precipitate development and influence and motivate the wider Port and business community.

The Corporation and the entire Port community embrace the opportunity to continue their strong economic and social relationship with the city and the wider region.

Looking Ahead: Our Objectives
