AN upgrade to the Port of Townsville Environmental Park in South Townsville is nearing completion, with just over $1.2 million spent on the Park by Townsville Port Authority since its official launch three years ago.
Almost three kilometres of footpath have been constructed from Boundary Street through to Bell Street for walking and bike riding. These paths will link up with the Townsville City Council Cycle Network. Landscaping works are also being carried out between Hubert Street, Cannan Street, and Bell Street. This includes irrigation and planting garden beds and mounds with trees, shrubs, and some grassed areas. The final stage of development, including the installation of interpretive signage, seating and further plantings will be undertaken during the 2006/2007 financial year. Mr. Ron McLean, Chairman of Townsville Port Authority, said: “This is the latest piece of the planned development of an environmental park started some 12 years ago. The Environmental Park provides an excellent recreational and educational area for members of the public and a natural habitat which acts as a buffer between the Port and our neighbours. About the Park Townsville Port Authority Environmental Park is bounded by north-west Archer Street to south-east Boundary Street and covers an area of 6.24 hectares. A wide range of well-established native plants can be found in the park, providing an important natural food source for birds and animals. Townsville Port Authority, in partnership with the Townsville Thuringowa Indigenous Peoples Community Employment Enterprise Development (TTIPCEED) Aboriginal Corporation, maintain the park. This partnership offers training and employment opportunities to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are interested in the Horticulture field.
