TOWNSVILLE Port Authority has beaten stiff competition to take out the ‘Innovation in Security’ award at this year’s Australian Shipping and Transport Awards which was held in Sydney on 29 November.
The Authority trumped other finalists, Sydney and Fremantle Ports, to take out the top gong in security for 2007.
The award was made for any Australian-developed system that improves the operation or cuts the cost of security in ports or aboard ships in port. It is made for innovations in management or administration of shipping, use of technology, or a port that achieves a major improvement in security.
Barry Holden, Townsville Port Authority Chief Executive Officer, said: “this award would not have been possible without the commitment and hard work from our employees, particularly our Marine Services division and especially the Manager Marine Services, Ms Belinda O’Connor.
“Townsville Port Authority and the port community are committed to providing a secure working environment. We have built on this foundation to develop an overall port community approach to security to achieve consistent, efficient and cost-effective security measures for all port users that are simply implemented and clearly understood,” he said.
Speaking on the Port’s security system Mr. Holden said: “Townsville Port Authority’s security system has achieved results over and above expectations. Processes and procedures are continually reviewed and changes implemented to ensure continual improvement and cost effective security for all port users. The Port of Townsville has achieved outstanding results in new, and at times, somewhat complex legislation.”
Innovation at the Port of Townsville
Innovative security measures introduced at the Port of Townsville include the installation of boom gates, a guard hut and an electronic card access system, as well as other new security measures to comply with ISPS legislation.
Townsville Port Authority has also installed a number of systems and reporting processes to ensure accurate and timely recording in all security-related areas.
A Port Security Committee was formed and consists of a representative from each port organisation, relevant government agencies and Townsville Port Authority management. This promotes a port-wide commitment to security.
Townsville Port Authority has also developed a close working relationship with the Royal Australian Navy with desktop and actual exercises taking place at or around the Port. The US Navy also recognises Townsville as a secure port.
The Authority continues to work on improving communications between all port users, relevant agencies and the general public to ensure a safe and secure Port environment, with minimum interruption to business. A reduction in the frequency of security events has confirmed that this approach is successful and achievable.
