Port of Townsville - Australia's Link to World Live Cattle Markets

Cattle Loading

The Townsville Advantage:
The Port of Townsville is encouraging a ‘whole of industry approach’ to the export of live cattle from Townsville and is dedicated to promoting the development and expansion of the live cattle export industry.

The Port of Townsville’s close proximity to world markets, its supporting infrastructure and services, and the suitability of north Queensland cattle breeds, places the port in an ideal position for future expansion of the live cattle export industry.

Cattle export markets include: Brunei, Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Pacific Islands.

State of the Art unsurpassed cattle handling and animal welfare
The Port also has dedicated road links which allow for double deck road transport of cattle. With the close proximity of the cattle holding facilities to the port and the dedicated intermodal links, cattle spend far less time on transport and are loaded on board in a fit and, healthy condition. This ensures that cattle exported from Townsville are of a consistently high quality. The efficiency of the intermodal transfers means that ships in Townsville have an extremely fast turnaround time with best animal welfare practices maintained.

World Class Infrastructure and Facilities with Unparalleled Efficiency
Fast load rates of up to 600 head per hour, are made possible by our supporting infrastructure. Two fully-portable double deck loading ramps are located at berths 3 & 10 and facilitate the smooth unloading of cattle from double deck road trailers. This allows the stock to move readily up the ramp and onto the ships. Simultaneous loading of fodder and cattle takes place within the port.

Close Holding Areas
Image The Port of Townsville’s berthing facilities allow for the loading of three cattle ships simultaneously. Personnel employed by companies that load cattle at Townsville Port have undergone training in cattle handling techniques. One cattle holding facility is located within 15 kilometres of the port and can accommodate a total of 8,000 head of export cattle at any one time. A second holding facility is located forty kilometres from the port and can hold 7,000 head.

A deep water port which never stops
The port’s deep approach channels (dredged to a declared depth of 11.7 metres at lowest astronomical tide) and wharves allow unrestricted access to any size live cattle ship 24 hours a day 365 days per year.

Competitive Port Charges
Townsville offers significant cost saving advantages in terms of port charges and is extremely competitive with all other Australian ports.

Access to Quality Cattle
Townsville is naturally located close to the ideal grazing areas of Northern and Western Queensland. Cattle from these areas are of excellent quality suitable to breeding, feed lot or immediate slaughter.

Total Supply Chain
The Port of Townsville is developing relationships with industries and Government and providing assistance in initiating trade links with other countries.

Townsville Port offers the complete package of integrated services and is facilitating and enhancing Queensland and Australia’s export ability in this dynamic industry.

The Australian livestock export industry is the most highly regulated in the world, and is recognised as having the world’s best standards for livestock export. Everyone involved in the industry cares deeply about animal welfare, with the industry investing significant time and money on initiatives to improve the welfare of Australian livestock transported overseas.
