Stage 1 of the Townsville Marine Precinct will be created over the northern half of Benwell Road beach. The beach south of Archer Street will remain open for public use until subsequent stages of the project progress.
Port land immediately north of the project site will be used to stockpile rock during construction.
The reclamation will require up to 350,000 tonnes of rock to be brought on to the site and some dredging adjacent to the Ross River channel to create a harbour.
An area upstream currently being used by existing marine industries will be used to provide public boating facilities.
The State Government has committed to 12 boat ramps, 2 pontoons and 250 parking spaces in this area.
