Townsville Marine Precinct is a $110 million dollar extension of the Port of Townsville designed to accommodate a world class facility for marine related businesses.
The Precinct is scheduled to be operational by June 2011, allowing existing Townsville businesses currently operating further upstream to move into modern, easier managed and controlled premises, protecting approximately 500 associated jobs.
Stage 1 will occupy the northern half of the Benwell Road Beach with the southern end remaining available for public recreational use at this time.
Commencement of construction follows Federal Government approval for the project under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the finalisation of an Environmental Management Plan outlining strict guidelines for the project.
The Precinct will include
a commercial ship-lift, docking facility and associated maritime facilities and infrastructure to support boat building and maintenance;
berths for trawlers, scientific vessels and dumb barges with sullage and refuelling facilities for commercial and recreational users;
commercial and recreational chandlery; and
seafood industry cold storage and distribution facilities.
