Townsville Port seeks a high-flying Marine Pilot

Name a job where your work environment is set amongst the tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, and every day you get to navigate vessels through it?  Answer: Port of Townsville Pilot.

Marine pilotage is among the most specialised jobs in the marine industry. Good pilots are calm, cautious, have foresight, show good judgement and make decisions quickly. Their top objective is to ensure the safety of the ship and its crew, and the security of navigation in pilotage waters.

All vessels arriving at the Ports of Lucinda, Townsville and Abbot Point are required by law to be guided by a Pilot. The Townsville Port Pilot boards the vessel by a transfer on a pilot boat, provides direction to the master in control of the vessel either inbound to a berth or outbound to sea. Marine Pilots are also in charge of vessel docking and undocking manoeuvres.

The ideal candidate for Townsville Port will be a qualified and experienced Marine Pilot, however this opportunity may also be suitable for a Master Mariner with experience of ship handling in a command position on large seagoing vessels, looking for a ‘sea change’.  The candidate must possess an unrestricted Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency (including Manila STCW 2010 Amendments), issued or recognised by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

The three locations of pilotage offer unique and challenging pilotage work and requires passion, which is a characteristic that Townsville Port Pilots possess.

Entering the channels in tropical North Queensland on a cruise or military vessel just as the sun is rising is a scene no one forgets. Townsville Port is certified with Environmental Management Certification from the International Organisation for Standardisation ISO 14001:2015. As the largest general cargo and container port in northern Australia, Townsville Port is committed to responsible stewardship of port lands and waters.
