East Port Project
Port of Townsville is well positioned to support North Queensland’s future industry development with a newly constructed multi-million-dollar Project Cargo Laydown Area and associated transport network upgrades.
The 14-hectare dedicated laydown area will serve as temporary storage for wind turbine components including blades of up to 100m long, and other large project cargo imports.
This infrastructure is critical in enabling and maintaining efficient international supply chains into the future, helping secure North and North West Queensland as a hub for global trade growth and supporting the region’s future economic activity.
It marks an important step toward facilitating the significant pipeline of planned investments in the region and will support emerging industries like renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, as well as existing sectors like critical minerals as they continue to grow.
The project directly supported 30 full-time equivalent positions, including three apprenticeships and traineeships, with 90 per cent of the workforce being locally sourced.

Future Works
Building on the completion of the 14-hectare Project Cargo Laydown Area and associated transport network upgrades, the next stage of works will deliver a dedicated swept path between berths two, three and four, and the new laydown area.
This critical infrastructure will enable the safe and efficient transport of wind turbine components and increase the Port’s capacity to handle larger and more complex cargo.
Construction is scheduled to commence in March and be completed by the end of June 2026.
