Capricorn Copper exports first shipment

22 February 2018

Port of Townsville Limited (POTL) has today welcomed the news of Capricorn Copper’s first shipment of high quality copper concentrate via Berth 11.

Port of Townsville General Manager Business Development Claudia Brumme-Smith said that it was a historic day for the Capricorn Copper mine, located 125 kilometres north of Mt Isa.

“What a fantastic day for the team at Capricorn Copper as their first shipment loads at Berth 11,” said Ms Brumme-Smith.

“We understand this shipment to be the first of many for Capricorn Copper, who are forecasting to produce more than $2.5 billion of exports from the mine over its initial 10-year life,” she said.

“Capricorn Copper’s restart has had a positive impact for the Northwest minerals province, and the link to Townsville provides the infrastructure and resources for Capricorn Copper to access its international customers.”

“We have enjoyed working with Capricorn Copper in the leadup to this important day, and look forward to a long term productive relationship for many years to come.”

The Capricorn Copper mine is one of Australia’s largest copper development projects located in a prolific base metals region, 125km north of Mt Isa in North West Queensland. Capricorn Copper’s Board approved the capital program to commence the Refurbishment and Restart Project (RRP) in November 2016, following the completion of a detailed feasibility study, which outlined the optimal strategy to recommence operations on a sustainable basis.
